Many bloggers and health advocates have made statements about plastic teabags. They reported their findings on the assumption that all silky tea bags contain petroleum-based plastic or nylon. Several data reports show that the common petroleum-based nylon and polyester silky tea bags on the market do in fact leach harmful plastics into the tea and are unsafe. We want to acknowledge that these are valid findings and appreciate the work people are doing to keep us all safe. However, it is important to differentiate our plant based PLA tea bag fabric from petroleum based materials. PLA is a different material and is not petroleum based. PLA tea bags should not be linked to these reports or tests of unrelated materials.
Our PLA fabric was tested using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) which allows a lab to test the fabric in it's entirety for harmful phthalates. None were detected, not even in trace amounts. PLA goes well beyond the conditions required to comply with USCPSC safety standards. Lab tests show it is BPA-free and phthalate-free ensuring PLA as a safe option, free of harmful plasticizers. This is great news and offers much needed peace of mind.
