We are a very small tea company truly passionate about what we do. We love tea and drink a lot of it! Our blends are crafted from teas and herbs sourced as directly as possible looking first to farmers here in the USA. All of our recipes are original and unique offering herbal formulas made by people who love and use herbs themselves for wellness. We strive to be a source of beauty in the world working hard to develop relationships with growers and always prioritizing community and quality over profit.
Yes! We are certified by the WSDA and the USDA.
Yes, we do. While we primarily use certified organic ingredients, there are 3 herbs we feel are much higher quality when harvested in their wild environment. We only work with with harvesters who respect the natural environment as much as we do. Those wild ingredients are Yerba Santa, Hawthorn Flower and Hypericum (aka St. John's Wort).
While we love all of our teas iced, there are definitely a few that really shine when brewed up as iced tea. For non caffeinated options, we love Old Town Berry, Lavender Orange Red, Peace of Mind and Farm & Forest. For caffeinated options, the simplicity of Ancient Sunrise is amazing. We also love Vanilla Rose Ceylon, White Lemon Ginger and Lemon Mint Maté.
Each tin holds about 2oz. A general rule of thumb is that each ounce of tea by weight makes a gallon of brewed tea. By this formula, you get about 32 8oz cups.
Our herbs and teas are sourced as directly as possible so they arrive to us fresh and vibrant. We use a beautiful, recycled steel airtight tin made in the USA to keep the tea super fresh once it leaves our shop. We can safely say that your tea will be good for at least two years and most likely longer.
The best way to keep your delicious Flying Bird products fresh is to keep your items stored in a temperature stable evironment. A cabinet in your kitchen away from the light is great for your bulk tea but feel free to store show off your beautiful canisters on your shelf. Just be sure they aren't getting heated by your stove or a hot window.
We chose steel because it is infinitely recyclable. In fact, it is so desirable that even if you accidentally throw it away, almost all waste facilities have giant magnets to pull the steel from the waste so it can be recycled into something new. You also don’t need to remove the label when you recycle our tins. Because steel is melted at such a high temperature the label will be incinerated and the steel ready to be reused. Our tins are great for reusing! But they are also a great choice for recycling as the value of steel is not diminished with each time it is recycled so you can be sure each tin will go on to become something new.
Good question! That number is a lot number associated with the spefici batch of tea we made used for our internal tracking and inventory system. While your tea will never technically never expire, it will use some of its freshness and flavor over time. We guarantee your tea will be fresh for two years from the date of purchase.
While none of our products contain gluten, we are not certified gluten-free. Additionally, some of our herbal teas contain green oat tops and oat straw. Oats do not contain gluten however, they have been known to be cross contaminated with wheat which does of course contain gluten. We buy our oats from farms that do not grow wheat so the likelyhood of contamination is extememly low, however, we realize you need to make decisions that are best and safe for you.
What are your tea bags made of?
No! Our teabags are made out of a silken, plant based fabric that allows the beauty of the whole herbs and teas to shine. The fabric is certified biodegradable and compostable in a high heat, commercial quality composting systems. They are not made of petroleum based nylon or plastic and unlike those materials, our teabags will not leach micro plastics into your tea. We care about our community and want to provide you and yours a safe cup!
The plant-based material is called polylactic acid (PLA). PLA is an inert, DNA-free material that is produced by breaking down plant starches. Through the process, no plant DNA is left behind, making the fabric allergen-free. PLA will not leak harmful plasticizers or micro plastics into your tea. There are no glues or staples in our teabags. The PLA mesh is sealed using ultrasonic vibrational energy.
Many bloggers and health advocates have made statements about plastic teabags. They reported their findings on the assumption that all silky tea bags contain petroleum-based plastic or nylon. Several data reports show that the common petroleum-based nylon and polyester silky tea bags on the market do in fact leach harmful plastics into the tea and are unsafe. We want to acknowledge that these are valid findings and appreciate the work people are doing to keep us all safe. However, it is important to differentiate ourplant based PLA tea bag fabric from petroleum based materials. PLA is a different materialand is not petroleum based. PLA tea bags should not be linked to these reports or tests of unrelated materials.
Our PLA fabric was tested using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) which allows a lab to test the fabric in it's entirety for harmful phthalates. None were detected, not even in trace amounts. PLA goes well beyond the conditions required to comply with USCPSC safety standards. Lab tests show it is BPA-free and phthalate-free ensuring PLA as a safe option, free of harmful plasticizers. This is great news and offers much needed peace of mind.
